Rick Anderson Place

Recently renamed from The Guthrie Center

Located on Guthrie Road, adjacent to Lowell Johnson Park (A.K.A. "The Ol' Swimmin' Hole"), Rick Anderson Place is a 2.39-acre property and structure being acquired by Anderson Island Park and Recreation District.

AIPRD's agreement grants the Lutheran Church a lease to the bottom floor for as long as they want it for their congregation.

For the time being, we are focused on closing on the property, then procuring permits, plans and materials for basic renovations to bring the full structure into an up-to-code, usable space for our community, with the top floor open to the community in 2025.

Remodel Progress

We know you are as eager as we are to see Rick Anderson Place open and serving our community. Since the building's purchase in 2023, we've bee diligently working to move this project forward behind the scenes.

Because the building's addition of the upper floor was permitted in the 80s and never built out, we were essentially starting from scratch with updated building codes. It took almost two years to have the in-depth conversations needed with these Pierce County departments:

  • Planning, including use, zoning, parking, landscape buffer, ADA compliance, etc
  • Building, including floor plan, egress, occupancy, plumbing, energy code
  • Development engineering, including green space, Right of Way, Traffic Impact, driveway approach
  • Health department, including water and septic
  • Fire prevention/suppression

By the time we had a sense of the work that needed to be done to attain permits, Pierce County had changed its codes to require sequential permitting (State, then county) rather than their previous policy of running the permit processes concurrently. This change has drawn out our timeline significantly.

We attained our permit from the WA State Department of Health in Fall 2025 which has allowed us to begin construction needed to connect the building with our Class A well on the neighboring Lowell Johnson Park property.

As of May 2026, we are in the final stages of that construction project, upon which we will continue down the list of Steps to Get to Opening that you see to the right/below.

Waiting for the state/county to review and approve permit requests or completions are the biggest factor we can't control. We'll do our best to move it along.

We currently have no solid date for opening the upper floor - it could be as early as summer 2027 or it could extend into 2028.

STEPS TO GET TO OPENING

Steps in italics are complete/in progress. Numbered steps are upcoming.

  • Procure $250k grant from WA state for the project
  • Purchase of building
  • Pre-meetings & design for permits
  • WA Dept of Health permit submission for well & septic
  • Construction to connect Swimming Hole well to building

  1. WA DoH completion approval
  2. Pierce County DoH completion approval
  3. Pierce County building permit submission
  4. Construction for upstairs remodel, outside egress and ADA parking
  5. Pierce County building completion approval
  6. Org move-in and setup

Rick Anderson Place Upper Floor Plan

Honoring Rick Anderson

Plaque Engraving

Rick Anderson Place is dedicated to Rick Anderson  for his fifty years of devoted public service as a commissioner for the Anderson Island Park & recreation District (1975-2925)

Announcement in May 2026

Following Rick's retirement in December 2025, the Park Board discussed an appropriate way to honor Rick's many years of service - both to the parks and to the community at large.

With his role in securing the acquisition of this building - decades in the making - the Board thought it appropriate that generations of residents and visitors would come to know Rick Anderson's name and associate it with the community-building he has always championed.

So the Guthrie Center is now Rick Anderson Place?

Yes! It has yet to be seen if a shortened version of the building emerges, but we are partial to "Rick's Place" or RAP as a way to short-hand the location.
