Anderson Island is getting a new track!

Construction Kicking off April 2026!

Anderson Island Parks is embarking on a public works project to upgrade the walking track at the island elementary school from a gravel and dirt path around the ball field to an engineered,  polyurethane-coated two-lane walking track with drainage and increased accessibility.

This fundraising effort is intended to encourage community businesses and members to be a part of this landmark project. If we don't raise enough funds through this effort, the track project will still be completed with AIPRD's reserve funds. This investment in our community is a priority!

When we embarked on this project, we were not surprised to find that there are limited choices for companies who do this kind of work.

However, we were very fortunate to find a company called Beynon Sports. While this is a national company, the local team have worked with many island communities in the Puget Sound. When others didn't bother to return our calls or just turned us away, they took the time to listen to our need, visit the site to understand the scope and speak to their experience with the unique challenges that building *anything* on an island can bring.

Our little project is breadcrumbs compared to the stadium-sized projects that are their bread and butter, but they have been wonderful partners so far in our quest to make this public works project happen.

We expect the prep to begin shortly after school lets out - the ground needs to dry out considerably from the wet season.

Here are the general steps:

  • April 8 - 17 | Site Prep - the track footprint will be flagged, then excavated and laid with base materials to ensure drainage and stability, and finally asphalt will be poured
  • Mid-April to Mid-May | Cure time - the asphalt then needs to cure for 28 days
  • Variable - Mid-May to Mid-Jun | Track surfacing - Once the base is ready, the crew needs 3-5 days of no rain to proceed with applying  the polyurethane surfacing, so progress is very weather-dependent. Once that step is done, they need another couple of days to stripe and stencil the track with "Anderson Island Soaring Eagles".
  • Summer 2026 - One parking spot near the street will be re-striped and stenciled to be ADA accessible, and the sidewalks will be extended to the track to complete the ADA work

The goal is to have this project wrapped up by the start of school in mid-August, but we are working closely with the school district to ensure we have contingency plans in place if the timeline extends into the fall.
